"Gramps, what's this?" he called down to the living room where his grandfather was reading a book.

"Leave that alone, Alex," his grandfather's voice echoed up from below. "It's an antique, a relic from the past. You shouldn't touch it."

Ignoring his grandfather's warning, Alex pressed a button on the emblem. The box's surface glowed brighter, and then, with a bright flash, Alex was gone.

When the light faded, he found himself standing in a dimly lit alley. The buildings were taller, the air was thick with a strange chemical smell, and the people around him wore strange masks over their faces. Alex's heart raced as he realized he had been transported to the future.

He wandered the streets, trying to find a way back, but the city was alien to him. The signs were in a language he couldn't understand, and the people looked at him with fear and suspicion. Just as he was about to panic, a woman approached him, her voice calm and reassuring.

"Are you lost, little one?" she asked.

Alex nodded, his eyes wide with fear. "I'm looking for my parents. They're here, aren't they?"

The woman sighed and led Alex to a small, rundown apartment. "Your parents are indeed here, but this isn't the home you remember. Their lives have been... altered."

Inside the apartment, Alex's parents were sitting at a small table, their faces pale and eyes hollow. They were surrounded by screens, their fingers tapping away at keyboards. Alex's mother turned to him, tears in her eyes.

"Alex, I'm so sorry," she said. "We didn't want this life for you."

Alex's father looked up from his screen. "We've been living in this world where technology has gone out of control. Our job is to protect the timeline, to ensure that the future doesn't spiral into chaos."
